You will only need the total width around your bay window. So measure around following where you think you would like the new bay track to fit. 

In most cases you won't be having the track return out of the bay with sill length curtains. They tend to hang on the side walls within the bay when stacked in the open position.

If your bay track is going to be ceiling fixed. Then measuring from the window sill level will work. Just take your sizes from up against the window frames where they meet the window sill. Then onto  the small small walls on each side within the bay.

If your bay track is going to be wall fixed. Then you will need to take all your measurements from across the walls where the brackets are going to be fitted.

There are some occasions where measuring the walls under the window sill is the best place to take your measurements. Then letting us know how much the window sill sticks out from the wall. This can work better when the window sill doesn't return out of the bay but finishes within the bay.  But you are having returns on your bay window curtain track.

You can see a couple of images below where measuring from the walls. Rather than the front edge of the window sills makes perfect sense.

These bay windows above and below are prefect examples. As to when measuring the walls under your window sill is the best solution for accurate sizes. You can then add the projection of the window sills out from the wall to the "Additional information" box on the final measuring form. 

Measuring this way means there is no confusion when you reach the external corners of the bay. We then get the correct angle for the bay and your new bay track. The curtains on this bay are going to hang down to meet the sill. Then stack off the side windows onto the walls when open.

in the images above and below.  Both the bay window curtain tracks will be completely ceiling fixed.  This is a really simple way to fit your bay tracks. Our bay track fitting videos show how simple the installion is.

The bay track above is going to be ceiling fixed and to fit only within the bay and will not return out on to the sides in the room.

The bay square bay style above shows the measuring position for a ceiling fixed track with curtains hanging down to meet the window sill. It's so much easier to measure a bay window at sill level. Rather than measiring above the window. This is often only possible with 2 people. One to hold the tape in place. then the other to reel out the tape and read the size.

The track will be made to fit 3cm off the sides of the bay. Then 5cm off the blinds on the main window of the bay.

In the square bay above the track has to be ceiling fixed as there is no other option.  Also, the curtains have to hang down to meet the window sill. As the option option of having long curtains is not possible.

The dotted lines shows the measuring position for the bay sizes. The track will be made to fit 5cm off the window frames.

So again as you can see measuring for a bay track for hanging sill length curtains. Can  be very simple and accomplished by one person.

In the image above the curtain track was made to fit to the wooden batten over the window (wall fix). To accomodate the length of the existing curtains. Although it would have probably looked neater being ceiling fixed. If the curtain length was not an issue. 

With this bay window the side batttens finished before the external corners of the bay. So we supplied spacers to fit behind the wall brackets on each end of the track.
